Information for New Students

Welcome at the Gutenberg School of Management and Economics!

To make the beginning of your study program as trouble-free and quick as possible, you will find all important information on the following pages.

Orientation Days of the Student Councils

At the beginning of every semester, the student councils of Business Science and Economics offer orientation days for new students. We suggest that you use this opportunity to learn more about the structure of your academic program and to obtain useful advice on how to plan your course schedule. You can find the dates for orientation days on the student councils' websites.

Student Advisory Service

The Central Student Advisory Service offers advice on making the transition from school to university as well as on matters relating to students’ individual studies.

Program Advisors

Every program has program advisors who provide assistance with all matters relating to your studies, e.g. the thematic focus of a lecture as well as prospects. For general information about your studies and contact details of program advisors, please visit the website of your particular study program.

Freshmen Program (Ersti-AG)

Every semester the Ersti-AG offers a freshmen program that links senior students to groups of first-year students. The Ersti-AG was established to support and encourage new students, to give them an opportunity to meet others and to learn about the what, where, who and how of uni life in Mainz. You can find the dates for Ersti-days on the Ersti-Team's website.

International Office

The International Office provides information and advice for international students before and during their stay at the University of Mainz.

Due to the broad spectrum of studies offered as well as their high academic level, the University of Mainz is ideal for foreign students.

Language Requirements and Training

Applicants for most programs must prove German language skills equivalent to a completed B 1 (basic level).

  • The M.Sc. in International Economics and Public Policy is taught in English. Applicants for this program must prove sufficient English language skills.
  • In some instances, doctoral students may be exempted from the German language requirements.

The admissions process has been simplified for undergraduate / graduate applicants for subjects with limited admission for students whose German skills do not qualify them for acceptance to the University of Mainz: you may be granted a „bedingte Zulassung“ (admission upon certain conditions). This means that a spot in the chosen subject will be reserved for the student. The student may begin studies in his/her chosen subject once the conditions for his/her admission have been fulfilled and as long as the legal environment has not been changed.

The International Preparatory and Language Center (Internationales Studien- und Sprachkolleg) offers German language courses as of B 2 (intermediate level) for those foreign students who wish to participate in a preparatory German language course. Applicants for most programs must prove German language skills equivalent to a completed B 1 (basic level).
